Explaining Legal Jargon Q&A

We participated in Solicitors Chat on Twitter answering questions about a legal jargon and the importance of legal terminology.

Our Digital Marketing Manager, Ruth Pendell, and Trainee Legal Executive, Lucy Watson, were on hand to provide some much needed guidance.

  1. Why are legal terms and phrases so important in contracts and cases?

Legal terms and phrases are important as using incorrect or different terms could change the whole case or contract as legal terms have a specific meaning in Law.

  1. How do you make sure your clients aren’t confused by legal jargon?

It is important to remember that not all clients have legal knowledge, therefore it is important to explain things in plain English without unnecessary legal jargon.

Explain what terms mean so that clients can get a better understanding of the legal issue that they are dealing with. It is always so important that clients know what Lawyers are doing for them so they don’t get confused.

  1. Why is it important for clients to understand their case and not be confused by legal jargon?

It is important that clients aren’t bogged down with legal jargon; they need to understand what their case is and what they need to prove. It is our role as legal advisers to understand the law and what is required and then explain this to clients.

  1. What should a client do if they’re unsure what legal terms mean?

Ask! Never be afraid to ask if you are unsure about any legal term. Our Lawyers are always on hand to answer any queries and explaining terms so they are easier to understand. Most legal processes are very daunting and stressful, so it is key that clients understand the process they are going through.

  1. Should legal terms be replaced completely with plain English alternatives?

In some cases there are English alternatives but legal terms should never be changed – only explained.
