Administration of an estate with a Will

Executors of the Will, or people nominated within it to manage the affairs of the deceased will need to apply for a Grant of Probate from the Probate Registry. It is not unusual for a law firm to be named as an executor but it is more common for close family members to be executors of the Will. For estates worth in excess of £5,000, the Grant of Probate is essential as it allows the executor to access and distribute funds and assets in accordance with the Will.

Administration of an estate without a Will

Without a Will, one or more of the people entitled to the estate under intestacy rules will need to apply for a Grant of Letters of Administration from the Probate Registry. This will allow them to become administrators of the estate.
